Strat-O-Matic 1988 Replay Mets Games 9-11


In this series the New York Mets face off against the St. Louis Cardinals for three games at Shea Stadium in New York.



Game 9 : New York Mets vs St. Louis Cardinals

In their first meeting of the year the Mets lose to the Cardinals 3-0. On the mound for the Mets was starter Sid Fernandez who pitched 6 innings and gave up 3 hits, 4 Ks, 4 BBs and 3 Earned Runs for an ERA of 4.50 getting Fernandez his second lose of the year. Terry Leach came in for relief in the 7th inning and pitched 2 innings giving up 1 hit, 3 Ks, 0 BBs and 0 Earned Runs for an ERA of 0.00. Randy Meyers pitched the 9th inning and gave up 1 hit, 2 Ks, 0 BBs and 0 Earned Runs for an ERA of 0.00.

The Mets were shut down by the Cardinals pitching only getting 4 hits in the game. Kevin McReynolds was 1 for 4 with a double.

The Cardinals starter was Greg Mathews who threw a complete shutout game giving up 4 this, 5 Ks, 1 BB and 0 Earned Runs for an ERA of 0.00 which gives Mathews his first win of the season.

Tom Brunansky drove in 3 of the 4 runs scored by the Cardinals with a three run home run. Tony Pena hit 2 for 4 with 2 singles.

The Mets are able to take game 2 from the Cardinals with a score of 7 to 3.

Rick Aguilera was the starter for the Mets who went 7 2/3 innings surrendering 8 hits, 4 Ks, 2 BBs with 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 1.17 earning him his second win of the season. Randy Meyers threw 1 1/3 innings giving up 2 hits, 1 K, 0 BBs and 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 6.75.

Kevin McReynolds hit his third home run of the season while hitting 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs only needing an triple to hit for the cycle. Keith Hernandez hit his first home run while also hitting 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

The Cardinals starter was Joe Magrane who threw 8 innings giving up 8 hits, 7 Ks, 0 BBs and giving up 3 Earned Runs for an ERA of 3.38 earning him his first lose of the season.

Tony Pena went 3 for 4 with 3 singles and Ozzie Smith was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Game 11 : New York Mets vs St. Louis Cardinals

The Mets won game three taking the series from the Cardinals 2-1.

The winning pitcher for the Mets was Dwight Gooden for his first win of the season. He pitched a complete 9 innings shutout giving up 6 hits, 6 Ks, 2 BBs and 0 Earned Runs for an ERA of 0.00.

Kevin McReynolds was 1 for 3 with a 2 run home run. Darryl Strawberry also hit a home run while going 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

The losing pitcher was Jose DeLeon earning him his first loss of the season. He pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up 8 hits, 3 Ks, 4 BBs and 5 Earned Runs for an ERA of 6.75. Todd Worrell came in and pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up 0 hits, 1 K, 0 BBs and 0 Earned Runs for an ERA of 0.00.

On offence the Cardinals had 6 players who each had one single each.

Wally Backman of the Mets suffered a minor injury and will miss 1 game.

At the end of the series the Mets record stands at (7-4) and the Cardinals record is (1-2)
