Let's Play 2012 World Series With Strat-O-Matic Game 2

Today I'll be playing game 2 of my Strat-O-Matic replay of the 2012 World Series. Last week I played game 1 and if you missed you should check it out. In today's game, the Tigers go into the game down 1 game just as they did in real life. Can the Giants win game 2 before they give up the home-field advantage?

For this game, I will be using the same lineup as they did in real life with one exception. As in game 1, I will be substituting Avisail Garcia with Brennan Boesch because I don't have Garcia's card.

DETROIT TIGERS LINEUP:

1.CF Austin Jackson
2. 2B Omar Infante
3. 3B Miguel Cabrera
4. 1B Prince Fielder
5. LF Delmon Young
6. SS Jhonny Peralta
7. RF Brennan Boesch
8. C  Gerald Laird
9. P  Doug Fister

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS LINEUP:

1. CF Angel Pagan
2. 2B Marco Scutaro
3. 3B Pablo Sandoval
4. C  Buster Posey
5. RF Hunter Pence
6. 1B Brandon Belt
7, LF Gregor Blanco
8. SS Brandon Crawford
9. P  Madison Bumgarner

TOP OF THE FIRST:

Austin Jackson leads off the game by crushing one over the center-field wall for his first home run of the series giving the Tigers and early 1-0 lead. Infante hits a grounder to third for the first out. Cabrera walks but the Tigers can't do anything with it as Prince Fielder hits a grounder to short and the Giants complete a double play to end the top of the first with the Tigers leading 1-0.

BOTTOM OF THE FIRST:

Angel Pagan makes the first out by hitting a line drive to first. Scutaro hits one deep to center but it's easily caught. Pablo Sandoval hits one into the outfield deep enough to make it safely to second. Buster Posey ends the first by striking out.

TOP OF THE SECOND:

Delmon Young leads off with a home run making it the second inning with a leadoff home run for the Tigers. Peralta flies out to right for the first out. Boesch grounds out for the second out and Laird grounds out to third for the third out with the Tigers winning with a score of 2-0.

BOTTOM OF THE SECOND:

Hunter Pence starts off with a strikeout for the first out. Belt makes the second out by flying out to center and Blanco grounds out to first for the last out of the second inning.

TOP OF THE THIRD:

The pitcher Doug Fister starts the third by flying out to right field. Jackson hits a weak grounder to first for the second out and Infante grounds out to short for the third out.

BOTTOM OF THE THIRD:

Brandon Crawford leads off the bottom of the third with a towering home run giving the Giants their first run of the game. The pitcher Bumgarner smashes a ball into center field and makes it safely to second. Pagan makes the first out by flying out to left field. Scutaro pops out to short and Pablo Sandoval flies out to center for the last out of the third.

TOP OF THE FORTH:

Miguel Cabrera hits a double for his first hit of the game. Prince Fielder also hits a double allowing Cabrera to score. Delmon Young hits a line drive to Scutaro at second who is able to double off Fielder for an unassisted double play. Jhonny Peralta makes the last out by striking out. The Tigers now lead 3-1.

BOTTOM OF THE FORTH:

Buster Posey makes the first out by flying out to center field. Pence makes the second out by also flying out to center and Belt flies out to left field for a quick 1-2-3 inning for the Tigers.

TOP OF THE FIFTH:

Brennan Boesch leads off by smashing a fastball into the outfield and legging out a triple. Gerald Laird hits a sacrifice fly to center allowing Boesch to tag up and score. Doug Fister flies out to center for the second out. Austin Jackson hits a pop fly to center to make the third out. The Tigers now lead 4-1.

BOTTOM OF THE FIFTH:

Gregor Blanco leads off with a walk. Crawford hits a grounder to short and the Tigers try to turn a double play but they are only able to get the lead runner out. Bumgarner strikes out for the second out and Angel Pagan grounds out to second for the last out.

TOP OF THE SIXTH:

Omar Infante grounds out to third for the first out of the sixth inning. Miguel Cabrera waits patiently and walks, his second time in the game. Unfortunately, the Tigers can't do anything with the runner as Prince Fielder hits a grounder to short and the Giants pull a double play. That's the second time Fielder has hit into a double play in this game.

BOTTOM OF THE SIXTH:

Marco Scutaro leads off by grounding out to second base. Pablo Sandoval is walked but Posey follows him by hitting a grounder to third and the Tigers turn a double play to end the inning.

TOP OF THE SEVENTH:

Delmon Young hits a long fly ball to left but it's caught for the first out of the seventh. Peralta also flies out to left for the second out. Brennan Boesch grounds out to short for the last out of the seventh.

BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH:

Hunter Pence leads off with a walk. Brandon Belt hits a blooper to the pitcher Fister who bobbles it for an error, all runners are safe. Gregor Blanco hits a grounder to second and the Tigers turn a double play, Pence makes it safely to third. Brandon Crawford ends the inning by grounding out to first base.

TOP OF THE EIGHTH:

Gerald Laird leads off with a ground out to third base. Fister hits a weak grounder to first for the second out of the inning. Jackson ends the inning by grounding out to short.

BOTTOM OF THE EIGHTH:

The Giants put in a pinch hitter for Bumgarner ending his day. Melky Cabera is walked followed by Pagan who makes the first out by going down swinging. Marco Scutaro hits a single to right and Cabera is able to make it to third safely. The Tigers decide it's time to sit Doug Fister as he appears to have run out of steam. Fister is replaced with Jose Valverde. Sandoval makes the second out by popping out to short. Buster Posey smacks one into right field scoring both Cabera and Scutaro putting the Giants within 1 of the Tigers. Valverde, visibly shaken, hits Hunter Pence giving the Giants runners on first and second. Unfortunately, the Giants aren't able to take the lead as Belt grounds out to short. The Giants score 2 but are still down 4-3.

TOP OF THE NINTH:

Pitching for the Giants now is Sergio Romo. His first batter this inning is Omar Infante and is able to get him to ground out to second for the first out. Miguel Cabrera goes down swinging for the second out. Prince Fielder hits a ground ball to short and the Giants throw him out for the last out of the ninth.

BOTTOM OF THE NINTH:

This is the Giants last chance to win and with them, only down by 1 run, they could easily do it. Gregor Blanco leads off with a ground out to second base. Crawford hits one deep to right but it's caught for the second out. The Giants have Joaquin Arias hit for Romo and he is able to make it safely to second for a double. Angel Pagan hits a pop up to short to end the game for a 4-3 win for the Tigers.

SUMMARY:

In the real game, the Giants won with a score of 2-0. Madison Bumgarner threw 7 innings without the Tigers scoring. The Giants ended up giving up 2 hits, 2 walks, 9 strikeouts, 0 home runs, for an ERA of 0.00. In Strat, the game played out a bit differently. The Giants pitching gave up 5 hits, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts, 2 home runs with an ERA of 4.00. In my Strat game, Bumgarner pitched a terrible game, 2 home runs and 4 runs scored against him.

The Tigers pitching in real life gave up 5 hits, 5 walks, 6 strikeouts, 0 home runs and had an ERA of 2.25. In Strat, the Tigers pitching gave up 5 hits, 4 walks, 4 strikeouts, 0 home runs and had an ERA of 3.00. As you can see the Tigers in Strat played closer to how they did in the real game. Hits given up were identical, walks off by 1, strikeouts off by 2 and they only gave up 1 more run than in real life.

This game turned out differently than it did in real life but that's OK. If Strat-O-Matic produced a product that was identical to the real game it wouldn't be any fun. Just like in real life Strat can go differently than you think it would and that's what's fun about playing games. If you always know what the result would be you would not play. Stay tuned for game 3 of my Strat replay of the 2012 World Series.
