Let's Play 1927 World Series with Strat-O-Matic Game 3

This week we have game 3 of my Strat-O-Matic reenactment of the 1927 World Series between the New York Yankees murders row versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. In the real world game, 3 took place at Yankee Stadium (1) in New York City.

As in game 2 my lineup is the same as the real-life lineup except for Kiki Cuyler of the Pirates in center field for the injured Lloyd Waner.

TOP OF THE FIRST:

Cuyler leads off the game with a walk. Hal Rhyne grounds out to third with Cuyler making it safely to second. Paul Waner hits a ball into the gap and makes it to second base safe with Cuyler scoring. Next, up Glenn Wright walks putting 2 on with 1 out. Pie Traynor ends the inning by grounding into a double play leaving the score 1 to 0 Pirates.

BOTTOM OF THE FIRST:

Combs leads off the Yankees half with a single. Mark Koenig drops a bunt and the catcher bobbles the ball allowing Koenig to make it to first safely. Babe Ruth hits a single loading up the bases. Lou Gehrig hits a sac fly to center allowing Combs the score the Yankees first run. Bob Meusel grounds into a double play ending the inning but not before the Yankees tie it up 1 to 1.

TOP OF THE SECOND:

Clyde Barnhart leads off with a single. Joe Harris pops one up behind the plate and Grabowski easily catches it for the first out. Johnny Gooch hits a line drive into the outfield moving Barnhart to second. The pitcher Lee Meadows ends the inning by hitting into the third double play of the game.

BOTTOM OF THE SECOND:

Tony Lazzeri gets his first hit of the game with a single. Joe Dugan hits a pop fly to left for an easy out. Johnny Grabowski makes the second out by flying out to center field. Herb Pennock ends the inning with the first strikeout of the game.

TOP OF THE THIRD:

Cuyler leads off by lining out to third. Rhyne grounds out to second and Paul Waner ends a quick half inning by flying out to left field.

BOTTOM OF THE THIRD:

Combs flies out to center field for the first out. Koenig grounds out to first and Ruth grounds out to short a quick third inning.

TOP OF THE FORTH:

Wright leads off by popping out to third. Pie Traynor gets a single. Barnhart makes the second out by popping up to the pitcher. Harris keeps the inning alive by hitting a single allowing Traynor to advance into scoring position. Gooch hits one hard into the gap between center and left field allowing Traynor to score, Gooch legs out a double. Meadows ends the inning again by popping out to second. The Pirates now lead 2 to 1.

BOTTOM OF THE FORTH:

Lou Gehrig leads off by grounding out to first. Meusel gets his first hit of the game with a single. Lazzeri gets his second single of the game with Meusel making it to third. Joe Dugan hits a fly ball to deep center but it's caught by Cuyler, Meusel scores for third. Grabowski rips one into right and gets an RBI double. With runners on second and third the pitcher, Pennock ends the inning by flying out to center field. The Yankees take the lead for the first time this game with a score of 3 to 2.

TOP OF THE FIFTH:

Cuyler grounds out to short for the first out of the inning. Rhyne gets his first hit of the game with a single. Paul Waner flies out to center field. Wright ends the inning with a line drive to the shortstop.

BOTTOM OF THE FIFTH:

Combs leads off by hitting a weak grounder to the pitcher for an easy out. Koenig makes the second out by grounding out to short. Babe Ruth ends the inning by going down swinging.

TOP OF THE SIXTH:

Pie Traynor flies out to center for the first out. Barnhart gets his second hit of the game with a single. Harris is up next and flies out to center. Gooch ends the top half of the sixth by flying out to center.

BOTTOM FO THE SIXTH:

Lou Gehrig makes the first out with a weak grounder to the pitcher. Meusel gets his second single of the game. Tony Lazzeri makes the second out with a strikeout. Joe Dugan gets on base with a walk. Grabowski ends the inning by grounding out to third.

TOP OF THE SEVENTH:

The Pirates pitcher leads off by grounding out to the pitcher. Cuyler makes the second out by grounding out to second. Rhyne gets his second single of the game but the Pirates can't do anything with their base runner as Paul Waner grounds out to short.

BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH:

Pennock leads off by flying out to right field. Combs makes the second out of the game by hitting a pop fly to third base. Mark Koenig gets his first hit of the game with a single. Babe Ruth crushes one over the right field fence for a 2 run home run. That is Ruth's second home run of this series. Gehrig ends the inning by fouling out. The Yankees extend their lead 5 to 2.

TOP OF THE EIGHT:

Wright leads off the inning with a single. Pie Traynor makes the first out by lining out to short. Barnhart gets on base with a walk for runners on first and second with one out. Unfortunately, Harris ends the top half by grounding out into a double play.

BOTTOM OF THE EIGHTH:

The Yankees left fielder Meusel leads off the bottom of the eighth with a single. Lazzeri also hits a single for his third hit of the game. Dugan hits a single as well driving in Meusel. Grabowski flies out to right field. The pitcher Pennock flies out to center field for the second out of the inning. Combs ends the night by flying out to center field. The score stands at 6 to 2 with the Pirates coming up for their last chance.

TOP OF THE NINTH:

Gooch makes the first out of the ninth by popping out to third. The Pirates send a pinch hitter in for Meadows. George Grantham does his job as a pinch hitter by getting a single. Cuyler makes the second out by flying out to center. Rhyne ends the game with a ground out to third.

SUMMARY:

Overall another fun game to play. The Yankees won in real life as well with a score of 8 to 1. 6 to 2 vs. 8 to 1 is close enough for me. In real life the Yankees pitcher Herb Pennock threw a complete game and gave up 3 hits, no walks, 1 strikeout and had an ERA of 1.00. In Strat Pennock gave up 10 hits, 2 walks, 0 strikeouts and had an ERA of 2.00. Strikeouts and walks were very close as was the ERA. Only the hits were off.

For Pittsburgh Lee Meadows pitched 6.1 innings and Mike Cvengros pitched 1.2 innings. In my Strat game, Meadows threw 8 innings. In real life, Pittsburgh gave up 9 hits, 1 walk, 8 strikeouts with an ERA of 9.00. In Strat, Pittsburgh gave up 12 hits, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts with an ERA of 6.75. An ERA is a bit low and the strikeouts were off by 5 but hits were only off by 3 and walks were right on.

This game so far was the most of compared to real life. The Yankees didn't crush Pittsburgh by 7 runs like in real life but 5 isn't too bad. In the end, the outcome was the same, a game 3 win for the Yankees. And besides, it's more about having fun than matching statistics exactly.
